Hebb, 1949: suppression is training

Every attempt to push a thought out must first locate it — which activates exactly the neurons you want silent. Repeated co-activation strengthens the synapses between them. Neurologically, fighting a thought and rehearsing a thought are the same exercise.

Wegner, 1987: the white bear

In Daniel Wegner's famous experiments, people told not to think of a white bear thought of it far more often. The mind runs a monitor that keeps checking “am I thinking it?” — and every check re-ignites the thought. Suppression doesn't fail sometimes. It fails by design.
